How much weight can Plywood support? A quick guide to structural load capacity

August 21 , 2026

In sectors such as construction, logistics, and technical furniture manufacturing, the load-bearing capacity of a panel is a critical factor to consider. Choosing the right thickness or internal structure ensures project safety and optimizes costs along the assembly line.

But how do you know exactly how much weight a board can handle before experiencing deflection?

Estimated load capacity guide by thickness

A panel’s strength depends on its thickness and, fundamentally, on the span (distance between supports).

Below is the structural load capacity for a support distance of 60 cm with a uniformly distributed load, based on standard structural plywood:

Board thickness Estimated capacity Industrial applications
6 mm 40 kg/m2 Wall paneling, lightweight packaging, decorative cladding.
12 mm 180 kg/m2 Light shelving, furniture components.
18 mm 550 kg/m2 Technical subfloors, workbenches, formwork.
24 mm 1.000 kg/m2 Industrial mezzanines, loading platforms, truck and trailer floors.

Technical rule: A board’s load capacity is extremely sensitive to the span due to structural mechanics. If you reduce the spa on an 18 mm panel from 60 cm to 40 cm, its stiffness increases and its allowable load capacity nearly triples

3 manufacturing factors that determine load resistance

The cross-laminated veneer structure provides plywood with high flexural and tensile strength. However, at our specialized Plywood division, HTPLY (Vietnam), we know that maximum performance depends on three key production variables:

Core Wood species

At our HTPLY plant, we select timber according to structural requirements. Eucalyptus cores offer maximum impact resistance and heavy-load capacity, Acacia provides excellent structural stability for construction, and hardwood species (such as Magnolia) facilitate easy machining.

Type of load (uniformly distributed vs. concentrated)

An evenly distributed load stresses the panel uniformly. If the weight is concentrated on a single point, you should increase the board thickness or add transverse structural supports.

Adhesive quality and moisture exposure

Moisture exposure reduces a panel’s stiffness. For outdoor or humid environments, using phenolic or WBP adhesives (Class 3 under EN 314-2) is essential to prevent delamination and structural weakening.

Material selection criteria for your purchase order

To guarantee mechanical performance across your production lines:

  • Require void-free cores: Internal gaps significantly reduce the board’s load-bearing capacity. HTPLYmanufacturing processes ensure the structural continuity of all inner veneers.
  • Control deflection (sagging): For spans exceeding 80 cm subject to heavy loads, add a reinforcement edge or batten to increase structural rigidity.
  • Consider technical surfaces: HTPLYsolutions, such as our anti-slip panels or film-faced plywood, provide additional resistance against mechanical wear and surface impacts.
