FSC-Certified wood: What it means and why it matters in the supply chain
October 16 , 2026
Wood is a renewable resource that, as trees grow, contributes to carbon absorption and storage. However, for its use to be truly responsible, it is not enough to know the material itself; it is also necessary to be able to verify where it comes from and how it has been managed throughout the supply chain.
In this context, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council®) certification is considered the international benchmark for responsible forest management and for verifying the full traceability of wood-based products.
Forest management and chain of custody: What is the difference?
To ensure the integrity of a product from its source through to final delivery, the FSC system distinguishes between two complementary areas of certification:
Forest management certification
This certification is assessed directly in forests and forest management units. It verifies that forest areas are managed according to strict environmental, social and economic criteria, including biodiversity conservation, soil protection, forest regeneration, and respect for the rights of workers and local communities.
Chain of custody certification
This applies to companies that process, transform or market wood. Its purpose is to maintain control and traceability of certified material at every stage of the supply chain, ensuring that it is not mixed with uncontrolled material or material from questionable sources.
For companies purchasing wood-based panels and components, Chain of Custody certification provides access to a documented, auditable and verifiable supply.
What does FSC Certification bring to a B2B project?
Incorporating FSC-certified panels provides direct value from both a commercial and technical perspective:
- Transparent traceability: Enables documented tracking of the raw material, providing comprehensive control over the product’s origin.
- Support for responsible sourcing policies: Facilitates supplier approval processes for companies that require sustainability and corporate social responsibility standards.
- Credits in sustainable building assessments: The use of certified panels can contribute to obtaining credits in building and infrastructure sustainability assessment schemes such as LEED or BREEAM.
- Alignment with European regulations: Provides a tool to streamline the due diligence and traceability processes required under the EUDR.
The chain of custody at HTP Global Group
At HTP Global Group, raw material traceability is the foundation on which we build our product portfolio. Our three industrial facilities hold FSC Chain of Custody certification.
- Betanzos HB (spain): Certificate covering the production of Hardboard (HB) and painted panels, using hardwood species such as locally sourced Galician eucalyptus under strict process controls.
- Tarnaise des Panneaux (Francia): Certificate covering the manufacture and sale of fibreboard (Hardboard) and plywood panels made from controlled and recycled forest sources.
- HTPLY (Vietnam): Certificate covering the purchase, processing and sale of technical plywood panels.
This enables our customers to request the relevant documentation and understand the scope of the FSC certification applicable to each product.
